Amadeus Global Travel Distribution was created by a group of European airlines in the late 1980s as a means of resisting the spread of US-based Global Distribution Systems (GDSs) into Europe. After an attempt to create a truly pan-European solution broke down, Lufthansa, Air France, Iberia and SAS formed a joint venture to build the Amadeus system.
